Music for The Tempest -Shakespearian ode

Barokorkest, koor en solisten van het Koninklijk Conservatorium

directed by Patrick Ayrton

At the age of 14 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Thomas Linley Jr. were best friends during their stay in Florence. Mozart was visiting with his father, Linley was studying violin with Nardini. The musicologist Charles Burney mentions in the memoirs of his travels in Italy that the two boys were creating quite a stir as musical geniuses. Linley died of a fatal accident at the age of 22 in England, but left a number of surprising works which have very likely never been performed in the Netherlands. These include "Music for The Tempest" and a "Lyric Ode on the Fairies, Aerial Beings and Witches of Shakespeare”, composed 150 years after the death of the playwright.

La Nemica d'Amore (the find of love falling in love)

Contrasto Armonico

directed by Marco Vitalea
with Stefanie True (sopra
no), Karolina Hartman (mezzosoprano), Mitchell Sandler (bass)

Bononcini´s La nemica Fatta amante d'amore ("The enemy of love falls in love") was first performed in Rome on August 10, 1693. A Serenata à 3, based on the story of the love between the nymph Clori and the shepherd Tirsi, in which the satyr Fileno plays a villainous role. A wonderful work in typical Italian style, which unfortunately is rarely performed. This performance is in the hands of an ensemble which specialises in this repertoire.

Alida Schat en Anneke Veenhoff

Alida Schat (violin) and Anneke Veenhoff, (fortepiano)

Undeservedly rarely presented in the Dutch concert hall: Dutch composers from the early Romantic era, the period around 1800 which succeeded the classic style. Johann August Just, Christian Friedrich Ruppe and Antoine Fodor will be rescued from obscurity by specialists in this repertoire, performed on instruments of the period. But Mozart and even Beethoven also make their appearance in this concert. And what did Hendrik Andriessen do with his illustrious predecessors?

The Passion of Johann Ludwig Bach (music for the Holy Week)

Musica Poetica en Hollands Vocaal Ensemble

directed by Jörn Boysen

In the rich Dutch tradition of St. Matthew and John Passions there is unfortunately little space and attention for other music appropriate during Lent. Bach's son Carl Philipp Emanuel was surprised in 1754 that his uncle Johann Ludwig was so little known across the border... But the composer wrote extraordinary music, which survives in the Anna Amalia Library in Weimar. In a series of motets for double choir with instrumental accompaniment (including Das Blut Jesu Christi and Das ist meine Freude), interspersed with instrumental works, Musica Poetica will present an alternative passion concert which will, in any case create cause for reflection.

Mit Tränen Säen (music for the Holy Week)

La Barca Leyden

directed by Raymond Honing
Soloists: Wendy Roobol and others (to be announced later)

In 2009, La Barca Leyden gave a remarkable performance of Bach's St. John Passion. This time the ensemble will present a completely different Passion programme on Good Friday: beautiful motets of Johann Sebastian Bach (Komm Jesu, komm) and Heinrich Schütz (Mit Tränen säen). After the interval will sound the dramatic Requiem (Messe des Morts) by the French composer Jean Gilles who died so young. A different Passion experience than you may be used, but no less impressive!

Master and student - harpsichordconcerts by J.S.Bach

Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra o.l.v. Ton Koopman

with Ton Koopman, Tini Mathot, Patrizia Marisaldi and Pietor Paganini, harpsichord

Johann Sebastian Bach has composed many concertros for harpsichord and strings, some of them arrangements of (meanwhile lost) violin concertoes. He frequently played them himself with his pupils. During this concert Ton koopman will be playing concertoes for two to four harpsichords with strings with some of his former students. On the programme also Koopman's own arrangement - like Bach in his concerto for four harpsichords - of a Vivaldi concerto for four strings.

The Dutch Cabinet

Furor Musicus

Antoinette Lohmann (violin), Sarah Walder (viola da gamba) and Vaughan Schlepp (harpsichord)

How is it that 17th and 18th century repertoire of homegrown Dutch composers or their contemporaries who in any way have their name connected to the Netherlands, appear so little in concert programmes? And how did this music sound on instruments by Dutch builders of that time? Enough reason for musicians who regularly perform the jewels of the Dutch heritage to request a concert on original instruments from the collection of the Gemeentemuseum. Besides music from ´The Excellent Cabinet´ they will perform Philippus van Wichel, Johann Schop and masterful violin sonatas by Jacob Nozeman.
